Home Helpers Caregivers Sponsorship Establishes Dedicated Seniors Day for Individuals 65+

(Thousand Oaks, Calif.) –   For adults over 65 in the U.S., loneliness and social isolation are persistent challenges, with an estimated 43% of seniors regularly experiencing loneliness. The COVID-19 global health pandemic has only exacerbated social isolation and its cognitive health effects on seniors.

Museums can have a positive impact on the health and well-being of older adults. A recent study by the National Endowment for the Arts found that seniors who attended cultural events, including museum exhibitions and programs, reported improved mental and physical health compared to those who did not.

To help meet the needs of older adults in the community, the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO) will launch Seniors Day, a new dedicated day for individuals aged 65 and up, the first Thursday of every month beginning Thursday, March 3.

Seniors, including residents of assisted living and retirement communities, as well as their caregivers, can visit the admission-free Museum between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, enjoy a curator-led walk-through of its current exhibition and have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on art activity led by an established art therapist.

Partnering with CMATO to add the Seniors Day program to the Museum’s upcoming exhibition Landscapes Through the Eyes of Abstraction is Home Helpers Caregivers, a provider of in-home care and support for people in their homes, retirement communities, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities.

“Our goal is to be a welcoming and engaging institution for everyone, and we are particularly interested in ensuring the most vulnerable among us can seek out meaningful social connections and engage in joyful experiences through a visit to their community museum,” said Roya Alt, Executive Director, CMATO. “We are delighted to partner with Home Helpers Caregivers to set aside a specific day for seniors in which they can enjoy the beauty of the visual arts in a safe and comfortable environment, and excited at the potential of this new initiative to benefit older adults in our community in a meaningful way.”

The Pew Research Center estimates that by 2035, there will be more people over the age of 65 than children under 17.

“Home Helpers Caregivers is proud to partner with CMATO to give our amazing seniors in the Conejo Valley and beyond an opportunity to see exceptional art and enjoy being part of this wonderful community,” said Dwight Brown, owner, Home Helpers Caregivers.

CMATO is located on the second level of The Oaks, at 350 W. Hillcrest Drive. The Museum is open to the public Thursday from 2:00-6:00 PM and Friday through Sunday from 12:00 to 6:00 PM. General admission is free; a $6 donation is suggested.

The museum’s current exhibition, Landscape Through the Eyes of Abstraction, is a multi-media group exhibition that explores the concept of landscapes from a contemporary perspective. The exhibit runs through July 31, 2022.
